Tanzanites

Tanzanites are a stunning blue-violet gemstone which is relatively rare and highly prized. Discovered in 1967 in Tanzania by Manuel de Souza the source is now finite, as one mine has already been closed.

It is a variety of the mineral Zoisite and its colour can vary according to the angle it is viewed and sometimes flashes of red and green may be observed. Associated with new beginnings it is often a gift to new mothers and some believe it has healing properties and promotes wisdom and spiritual growth.

It is thought to be much more rare than Diamond, yet it is relatively soft being only 6.5-7 on the Moh's scale making it suitable for dress rings and needs to be worn with care.

Tanzanite is the December birthstone, Capricorn's gemstone and the 24th anniversary gift.
