Do you repair jewellery?

Heidi Kjeldsen - Pearl Necklaces

Do you repair jewellery?

Yes, we repair most types of jewellery with care and expert attention. Our team is here to help restore your treasured pieces from broken chains and worn clasps to loose stones or ring resizing, all your needs we aim to meet. At Heidi Kjeldsen, we understand that jewellery often carries sentimental value, and our goal is to help you wear it once again with confidence.

We carefully examine your jewellery before any repair begins to see what is possible. Some items need only a simple fix, whilst others may require more complex work. If a piece cannot be repaired then we offer a thoughtful redesign service using, if possible, your original stones or metals.

This blog explains how our jewellery repair process works, what we can help with, and how you can get started. We treat every piece with the same level of care and professionalism.

Step 1: Assessment of Your Jewellery

We will carefully inspect your jewellery in person and in our workshop before we begin any work. We know that each piece is different, and our goal is to understand its current condition. We check the metal, the settings, the stones, and look for any signs of wear or damage.

This inspection will help us to assess what is safe and secure and what is not. If a part is worn then we will check to see if it may be replaced or strengthened. We will ensure the repair will enhance the jewellery and add to its longevity and advise you if it is beyond repair.

Step 2: Repair Quote and Your Approval

Once we have fully assessed the work we need to do, we will estimate the cost for you. This cost depends on the materials needed and time required for the repair. More complex work, like repairing a setting and resetting a stone, may cost more than simply replacing a clasp. The price of gold is at an all time high so the estimates may be higher than expected.

We share this quote with you before starting any work. You have full control and decide if you wish to go ahead or not, with no hidden costs whatsoever. We do not begin the repair until you have clearly approved the quote in writing, usually via email. We aim to communicate with you and to make sure that you feel confident and fully informed and involved.

Step 3: Redesigning a Piece That Cannot Be Repaired

Sometimes, a piece may be too damaged to repair properly. If it is physically worn out or very weak then a repair may not be safe or long-lasting. We may suggest redesigning the piece entirely in such cases.

Heidi can work with you to create a new design using the original stones, perhaps repolished or often the metal can be incorporated or bullioned against the cost of remaking a new piece . For example, a broken ring or a lost earring may in some instances be converted into a pendant. This allows your treasured piece to live on in a different form. You can keep the memory, but in a new and wearable style.

Common Jewellery Repairs We Offer

We handle a wide range of repair work and approach each job with care. Below are some of the most common repairs we carry out for our clients:

Ring Resizing

Rings may become too tight or loose over time. We can usually adjust the band size while keeping the original design safe and intact.

Chain and Clasp Repair

Chains and clasps can break with regular wear and tear. We repair broken chain links or replace faulty clasps using industry standards to match the original style.

Stone Tightening or Replacement

Gemstones may become loose or even be lost. We check all stone settings carefully and can secure and tighten as necessary. If stones have been lost or broken, we can estimate to replace them too.

Rhodium Plating for White Gold

White gold may lose its bright finish over time as it is naturally a pale, buttery yellow colour. We polish the jewellery and re-rhodium plate to restore the jewellery to its original bright colour and finish.

Repolishing Worn Jewellery

Most jewellery needs to be maintained and a simple clean and polish can restore it to its former glory. Even silver jewellery can look as if it is new, with a professional clean and polish. We offer a free cleaning and checking service in the showroom, but if items are particularly scratched or have too much build up then we suggest a workshop clean and polish and will estimate cost according to the work required.

Restringing

All pearls need restringing regularly, otherwise the drill holes become eroded by a build up of acid producing bacteria which builds up on the silks. As soon as the silk looks grey then Heidi recommends a restring. This is done by Heidi with the utmost care and attention. Your pearls will look lovely again instead of dulled by a grey silk.

Repair Pearl Earrings

The gold or silver used to make earrings is likely to come away from the pearl over time. Heidi recommends that before you wear your earrings you check that they are secure, rather than lose one whilst you are wearing them and then you have the problem of trying to match with a new pearl. The join between the metal and pearl is constantly expanding and contracting at different rates so it is inevitable they will eventually need repairing.

Pendant and Bracelet Repairs

Gold is a relatively soft metal, as is silver. Moving parts such as links in a bracelet, pendant parts with chains running through them or links holding charms, pendants etc will all wear thin relatively quickly. Bracelets will become longer as the links wear away and this is the first sign to check and repair before it’s too late and a loss occurs.

Types of Jewellery We Can Repair

We work with a wide range of jewellery styles and materials. Our goal is always to maintain the original charm and value of your item.

  • Rings: We repair, resize, and clean rings while protecting delicate stones and settings.

  • Necklaces and Chains: We restore broken, tangled, or dull neck pieces into a wearable condition.

  • Earrings and Studs: We can tighten posts, replace backs, or repair broken parts.

  • Pendants: We repair and enhance their security so they may be worn safely again.

How Long Does It Take?

Repair time depends on the nature of the job. Simple repairs may take a few days, whilst complex work like resetting stones may take longer. We will always give you an estimated time during your visit although we do have a 6-8 week threshold built in just in case we are busy.

How Much Does It Cost?

The cost is based upon materials used, time taken, and how complex the work is bearing in mind the skilled workmanship involved. We will give you a full quote upfront, with no hidden charges. This helps you make an informed choice without pressure.

Free Cleaning and Checking Service

We also offer a free cleaning and checking service when you bring your jewellery to us. Our team will clean your items gently and inspect them for signs of wear or damage. This helps keep your pieces in good condition for longer.

Book an Appointment Today

You will need to book an appointment at our Oakham showroom to begin your jewellery repair. Once we see the item, we can assess its condition, provide a quote, and begin the process.

If a repair is possible, we will carry it out with care and attention. If it is beyond repair, Heidi can help you redesign it into something new and meaningful.

At Heidi Kjeldsen, we treat every item with respect. We know your jewellery matters to you and that is why it matters to us.
